My First Job Interview

This week I overcame one of the scariest things a PR senior will EVER have to face...my first job interview! I heard about the job opportunity from my professor and figured emailing my resume couldn't hurt. A few minutes after I clicked send I received an email with a request for an interview! A million thoughts came flooding into my head. What should I say? Which writing samples should I bring? What should I wear? These questions were only the beginning of the anxiety I felt. After speaking with my parents and getting advice from my professor, my anxiety was lessened and I felt ready for the interview. I felt confident in the fact that I would not completely bomb the interview and that even if I didn't get the job I could learn from this experience. Thankfully the interview went great! Later that day I was offered the job and I start this week part-time until graduation. Now with my confidence and the support of my parents, professor and friends, I can't wait to start and get my feet wet in the working world of public relations!

  1. Kalli...I'm really happy for you! And I'm glad I got to experience your first job offer with you! :-)

On the other hand...I am so completely jealous. I have yet to start actively looking for a job - however, I did just revamp my resume & update my portfolio. I must admit, I've been experiencing some job anxiety myself; am I ready for a full-time position, or should I do another (paid) internship over the summer and then look for full-time work? Talk about the real world creeping up on us!

  2. Well first congrats! what is the job for and what will you be doing?

I also have yet to start the job search, i have almost the same problem caitlin. i have a great internship now where i most likely will get job offer when I graduate and i can do that right away But i also have a internship for disney in the summer this will be the 2nd time that i've done an internship for them. I'm not sure what to do, disney is a great company to work for and it's just DISNEY all the perks are great, it's sunny and hot.

This other internship i'm doing now is like great, i do PR for a new clothing line. It's work but it's fun i like what i'm doing and i like who i work for. It's on long island where i live with my family and all my friends are mostly here or closer then Florida.

I really cant believe how fast the days have gone. Here comes the real world!

  3. CONGRATS! That's amazing! You told us in class that you were working for a PR firm in RVC.. I work in RVC, what firm is it? I'm starting to look for internships for the summer and I'm completely terrified to go on an interview! Just the thought of one gives me anxiety... Do you have any tips?

  4. I am completely jealous that the stress of finding a job is over for you and you're stepping into those big-girl shoes in your new job!

Let us all know what you're doing and learning. Especially since you are part-time until graduation, it'd definitely be interesting to hear about what you can actually do part-time and what they'll have you be doing once you are full-time in May.

The job search is nuts, so kudos to you for getting out alive :)

  5. First of all, CONGRATS KALLI! It's nice to know that other Hofstra PR students are being hired...you have given me a little more faith in my job search!

I think that being confident in yourself is one of the most important traits needed to nail an interview. However the only way to truly feel confident is to prepare! You clearly went in to that interview well prepared, which allowed you to be confident.

Just out of curiosity, how many writing samples did you bring with you? I'm editing my portfolio and would love any tips that you have!

  6. Congratulations! That's really exciting that you already have a job! It's encouraging to hear that fellow students are getting jobs. I've heard from a few different sources that things are looking up for 2011 graduates..so let's hope so! Your situation goes to show how networking and simply sending resumes out can result in a career. Good luck with it!

  10. Kalli! This is so wonderful! The first interview is definitely the scariest one and fortunately for you it lead to your first job too! After the first one though, they definitely get easier as you are more prepared for the questions they will ask.

  11. I too share in your anxiety with interviews. I remember my first internship interview, I was incredibly nervous. My palms were sweaty and a million thoughts were racing through my head. But once I went into the interview and talked with the HR rep, I calmed down and answered every question. After that, I haven't gotten very nervous during interviews. Congratulations on the job and I hope you enjoy it.
